Trip to the Zoo

Mon Sep 10, 2012, 10:18 AM

Today I FINALLY made a trip to the Helsinki Zoo, which I've been wanting to do for so long, but something always came up in the way. I had a great day, I spent over 6 hours in the Zoo.  I took loads of photos, and some of them even turned pretty decent. :D
I liked all the animals but my favourite was definately the Red Panda, I so fell in love with that animal. The Big Cats and Lynxes were very cool too. And I learned they currently have 3 snow leopard cubs in the Zoo, 2 and half months old now. But they are still mostly in their nest, so I couldn't see them. I will have to make a new trip there later this Fall when the cubs are older and coming out of their nest. I really want to see them. =)

It started raining at one time, even though the forecast promised it wouldn't.
And I think I may have caught a cold walking in the rain, cause now I have a headache and feel like my temperature is rising. But despite that I'm still happy I went. It was worth it. :D

I'm not sure will I post any pictures today yet, I'm kinda exhausted. But if not today I will tomorrow at least. Expect a lot of them! :D

I've been to the Helsinki zoo a year ago and I, too, loved the red panda to death! (well, not literally, luckily) It's such an awesome location, when I was there the sun was shining and we had a picnic at the shore. Only problem is, if you build a zoo on an island you can't ever expand to give the animals more space, and I think a lot of their animals should have bigger cages. :/ Ah but don't get ill, please! *hands you a cup of tea and a hot water bottle* there, now you'll be fine. =))

Thank you! I'm fine already. =)
Yes it's a beautiful island but I agree the cages could be bigger.
And also that's why they can't have elephants or giraffes in the zoo cause the those animals need a lot of indoor space, which they don't have. =(
I've visited the Berlin zoo once, really liked that one.

Ah yes I went to Berlin for a weekend once and the zoo was definitely the best part of the whole trip. We spent almost eight hours in there! :o And still didn't see everything. It's really large. In my home city Cologne though the zoo is right in the heart of the city and thus can't expand either. So over the past years, they've been giving animals away to other zoos. Now most German zoos try to specialise, so they can grant the poor beasts more space -- Cologne has large areas for the elephants and hippos, while they gave the polar bears to Berlin. I think that's really nice not just for the animals but also for the visitors, because the more space you give an animal the more interesting it'll be to observe them, too. I hope more countries will adapt to that spirit and realise that a good zoo isn't one with as many species as possible.
Ah well. Great to hear you didn't get too ill! :) And do bring us pictures of the leopard cubs soon!

Yes, there were two. But in different cages. One in the "open" cage with many trees and stuff.
And one were the cats are. I could see it trough the window eating grass :D but unfortunately the pictures were not good. But yeah, two of them.
